Research revealed trends that are already happening in new ways of working

"How is your new normal?", this was the name of the survey applied in June, 2020, which heard 355 liberal professionals, employees, and owners of private companies in the three southern states of Brazil: RS, SC, and PR. The topics approached were: work during the pandemic; home office experience; mental health; expectations for the post-pandemic; what is important in a work environment, among others.

The data pointed to trends that, at the beginning of 2021, can already be seen:

- Home Office has been approved - The world was already changing before COVID-19. The pandemic only accelerated the ongoing trends. The technology that makes us able to get work done from anywhere was already available, and this trend of working from anywhere was something that had been underway for some time, see the rise of shared workplaces. It was a forced test, but one that apparently worked.

- The Search for a Balance - However, working at home office is not for everyone, and even for those who like and adapt, the model may not work if adopted every day of the week. The best format will depend on each profile, and it will be necessary to find a balance between what the employee needs and what the company can offer.

- The Hybrid Model and Decentralization is the way - And in this search for offering a model that is a win-win for companies and collaborators, the hybrid working model has been gaining prominence, where companies give the option to collaborators to mix the home office with the work office during their working hours. These offices may or may not be owned, since more and more companies are looking for rooms in shared spaces as a way to save money and even decentralize their offices, offering one more benefit to their employees, who can choose to work from a point closer to their residence.

Camila Borelli, CEO of Nau, who has taken a deep dive into the data, explains that it is necessary to find a balance between the digital and the physical, between productivity and quality of life. "As a space that was born for the world of work, but from new concepts of sharing, well-being, flexibility and diversity, Nau is always attentive to change. And this research from last year is today almost like an anticipation of what we are already living in the beginning of this return and so many expectations with vaccination", he highlights.

The Mental Health issue

Mental Health has been a strong concern with the pandemic all over the world. Social isolation, changes in the routine at work, home office, more family interaction, unemployment, are just some of the issues that have an impact. The Nau research also asked how the mental health of the entrepreneurs was and, at the time (June/2020), the majority answered to be a little tense, but still ok (62%); already 4.4%, said that "things were bad" and 5.3% were "about to freak out".

In Brazil the concern about the mental health of workers is great, since data from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that the country has the second highest number of people with depression in the Americas, with 5.8% of the population, and the country with the highest prevalence of anxiety: 9.3%.

And what about offices in the post-pandemic?

The research evaluated that offices tend to be aggregating poles, points of connection and experience, and no longer just the place where work is done. The work environment has to be rethought far beyond the health issues imposed by the pandemic, because people no longer have the same expectations as before. Relationship and experience have become indispensable.

In terms of infrastructure, Sara Borelli, architect and partner at Nau, points out that offices will have more spaced structures, without the concern with maximizing space that was seen before. "We will see more open spaces and shared workstations, without demarcation of desks, thinking about the rotation that the office will have. There will also be a greater concern with the decoration of the spaces, which should be more welcoming, reflecting positive points of the home office work experience, and incorporating features of biophilic architecture," he explains.
