What is systemic vision? Understand the ability that every leader should promote

Skill will be a demand for business success and also for successful career development

If you are going to ask what the biggest difficulty of returning to work is in person, the answers should be varied: traffic, organizing the routine of home and office, gathering the whole team on the same day and many others.

And all the personal challenges are true, but there is a concern for the business that needs to get on the radar of managers: the fragmentation of work.

It’s nothing new: it’s very easy to focus on your deliveries and miss what happens on other teams. But with remote work, the physical and visual absence of co-workers further isolated each employee.

In the research "Research Nespresso Professional: The Future of the Work Environment in the Post-pandemic Scenario", leaders pointed out the main disadvantages of the home office for day to day work.

First, there was a lack of interaction with colleagues. Leaders also presented other problems, such as less networking and more impersonal relationships.

For the experts Yuri Trafane, CEO of Ynner, and Rafael Souto, CEO of Productive, there is an important remedy for this diagnosis and it is also a valuable skill for the career: the systemic vision.

What is systemic vision?

It’s the ability to see the whole of the business. Thus, the professional can insert his work and measure its impact within the organization, understand about the sector and the market, understand about the needs and strategies of other areas and still perceive trends around them.

According to Trafane, fragmentation within organizations has always been a challenge. Different areas have always had different goals and purposes. Now, however, physical separation coupled with external threats amplified this aspect.

And having the ability to see the whole is not only positive for the company. It is also a crucial skill for career development and new opportunities.

"More than ever, people need to take the lead. Consider scenarios, read what happens in the company and interest me, ask colleagues about their areas, know what is growing and what is not. Finally, be curious", says Souto.

These are all the advantages that someone with systemic vision accumulates in their arsenal to make decisions about their career.

"If you don’t have systemic vision, it is more difficult to have control over your own career. And then it is very much in the hands of a third party," he says.

What does leadership need to do?

Having a team connected to the business and among themselves is a great advantage also for leadership. To explain this, Trafane brings the maxim: "Intelligent people, acting intelligently individually, can generate an unintelligent result."

The executive gives as an example what happened this year in the American Basketball League (NBA) games with the Los Angeles Lakers team.

Considered one of the strongest teams of the season, with players such as Lebron James and Anthony Davis, the team did not even qualify. For him, this shows a lack of skill and synergy between players.

"When professionals act systemically they increase the likelihood of success of their companies. It’s like a team from any collective sport.

It may have many high-level players, but if they don’t work synergistically the team will lose. That’s what just happened in the NBA, "he says.

Tips for developing skill in teams

Be an educator: "The leader needs to invest time in people’s agenda and know how to connect this demand with the person’s career through storytelling. Skill is for development as a professional and it is possible to think together about strategy, "says Souto.

Practice detachment: "The leader cannot create his castle and not let anyone touch his area. This reinforces the creation of silos and the custom of not talking to others. It is necessary to make a detachment, let the employees circulate in the company, "adds Souto.

Be an "anti-sil" leader: "The best promotion is being someone with a systemic vision and showing that he values professionals who act for the company and not for themselves or their areas", says Trafane.

Create rituals: "The leader can promote greater interaction with other areas by organizing presentations in which professionals from different departments tell their leaders how they work," says Trafane.
