How does the work environment help retain talent?

Every day that passes we have seen how companies have invested a lot in the quality of the work environment and it is not at all that the professionals of the market have increased their demands in relation to this. So withholding talent has become a necessity.


The relationship between work environment and talent retention is still relatively recent. Although it seems obvious to younger and more modern companies, some management have difficulty understanding how these two factors are somehow connected.


Currently, the work environment acts as a key piece for talent retention, a drop in turnover, and even an increase in employee engagement and productivity. Let’s explain how this happens!


The competitive differential


It is a fact that nowadays the qualified workforce has become more accessible and the number of job offers aimed at this audience, too. This means that the amount of talent that stands out in the market is limited, but the amount of companies that look for talent like this is large.


In order for these talents to seek, find and stay in a company, it needs to offer a differential in relation to others. It is at this moment that the quality work environment acts in the retention of professionals.


Engagement


Employee engagement is one of the variables with the greatest impact on talent retention and maintenance of turnover levels. Fortunately or unfortunately, this variable can be influenced by several external factors and one of them is the quality of the work environment.


When we talk about engagement or productivity, almost everything is connected. A quality work environment that corresponds to the characteristics and expectations of a professional, promotes high levels of satisfaction in employees. Consequently, the satisfaction stimulates their engagement with the company, with the work done and with the other professionals of the place.


Finally, high levels of engagement are also related to productivity since when satisfied and engaged, professionals tend to work better.


The work environment and talents of each generation


One of the things that many people forget and that should be taken into account is the fact that much of the current workforce is made up of millennial professionals.


Despite being another generation that is entering the labor market, in the same way as with its predecessors, millennials have special characteristics demanding changes in the traditional work environment and the way of working.


These new professionals, young, modern and flexible, are no longer attracted by what used to attract professionals of previous generations. They are attracted and preserved through a work environment that matches their interests and expectations, that engages them constantly, that offers great working conditions and that escapes from the traditional.


Meanwhile, all this modern adaptation of the work environment makes no sense if much of their talents are made up of generations who do not identify with it. To retain talent it is necessary to adapt each context to the reality of the company and the professionals inserted in it.


The work of retaining talents by working environment is a consequence of the feeling of the collaborators in relation to this place.


Another important factor that also contributes to the quality of the work environment and to the retention of talents is the organizational culture.
