#EscapeCult - The Origin of Pink October

The Pink October movement started in the United States, where several states had isolated actions related to breast cancer and/or mammography in the month of October, later with the approval of the American Congress, the month of October became the national (American) prevention month of breast cancer.

In 1997, entities in the cities of Yuba and Lodi in the United States effectively began to celebrate and promote actions aimed at preventing breast cancer, calling it Pink October. All actions were and are still aimed at raising awareness of prevention through early diagnosis. To sensitize the population initially, cities were decorated with pink ribbons, especially in public places, then other actions arose, such as races, fashion show with survivors (of breast cancer), bowling matches, and so on.

The action of illuminating monuments, public buildings, bridges, theaters and so on with pink lights. arose later, and there is no official information on how, when and where the first illumination took place. The important thing is that it was a practical way for the Outubro Rosa to have an increasingly comprehensive expansion for the population and that, mainly, it could be replicated anywhere, simply by adapting the existing lighting.

Pink October's popularity reached the world in a beautiful, elegant and feminine way, motivating and uniting different peoples around such a noble cause. This makes pink lighting assume an important role, as it has become a visual reading, understood anywhere in the world.

The first initiative seen in Brazil in relation to Pink October was the pink lighting of the Mausoleum of the Constitutionalist Soldier monument (better known as the Obelisco do Ibirapuera), located in São Paulo-SP. On October 2, 2002, when 70 Years of the End of the Revolution were commemorated, the monument was lit in pink "in an ephemeral period" as recalls the secretary of the Veterans Society of 32 - MMDC, Colonel PM (retired) Mário Fonseca Ventura .

This initiative was taken by a group of women who are sympathetic to the cause of breast cancer, who, with the support of a renowned European cosmetics company, illuminated the Ibirapuera Obelisk in pink, alluding to Pink October.

In May 2008, the Neo Mama Institute for the Prevention and Fight against Breast Cancer, headquartered in Santos-SP, in preparation for the Pink October, illuminated Fortaleza da Barra in pink in honor of Mother's Day and State Day (São Paulo ) for Breast Cancer Prevention celebrated every third Sunday of May. But the main objective was to raise awareness of the cause of breast cancer and encourage women in the Baixada Santista region to participate in the mammogram campaign carried out by the Government of the State of São Paulo. In the state of São Paulo every year 2 (two) mammography joint efforts are carried out, one in May and the other in November.

The various TV and newspaper reports, with the repercussions of Fortaleza da Barra illuminated in pink in May 2008, were presented in the same month at the "Course for the Cure" carried out by the American NGO Susan G. Komen, at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo-SP.

In October 2008, several entities related to breast cancer lit up monuments and buildings in their respective cities in pink. Little by little, Brazil was illuminated in pink in São Paulo-SP, Santos-SP, Rio de Janeiro-RJ, Porto Alegre-RS, Brasília-DF, Salvador-BA, Teresina-PI, Poços de Caldas-MG and other cities .

Brazil is known worldwide for its greatest symbol, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro-RJ. And for the first time, Christ the Redeemer was lit up in pink in Pink October.

In May 2009, the Neo Mama Institute for the Prevention and Fight against Breast Cancer, once again illuminated Fortaleza da Barra in pink in honor of Mother's Day and for the State Day (São Paulo) for Breast Cancer Prevention, celebrated every third Sunday of the month of May. But the main objective was to raise awareness of the cause of breast cancer and encourage women in the Baixada Santista region to participate in the mammogram campaign carried out by the Government of the State of São Paulo.

In October 2009, actions related to Pink October multiplied in all parts of Brazil. Once again, entities related to breast cancer and companies come together to expand the campaign.

With a strategic vision, Instituto Neo Mama will illuminate 2 (two) locations in Santos-SP, Fortaleza da Barra and Pinacoteca Benedicto Calixto from 10/23/2009 to 11/02/2009. This period is due to being close to the Mammograms Mutirão that will be carried out by the Government of the State of São Paulo on 11/14/2009. As the illuminated places are in front of the beach, they can be seen by tourists on cruise ships and those on the extended holiday where the number of tourists increases.
